Just a quick one for anyone that can help me out, i've often wondered what it is that makes a city a city and a town a town. I was always lead to believe it was to do with having a Cathedral but what other criteria are there as well as that to distinguish between the two? And on that note what makes a Cathedral a Cathedral and a Church a Church?
All answers will be truly welcome

Strictly speaking, a city has to be a large town incorporsated by a charter AND have a Cathedral, bishop etc. In the Bible it sometimes meant a settlement having walls as well.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a Cathedral is a place of worship which is dedicated to a particular city AND has a bishop assigned to it. They are also usually (but not always) larger than churches.
ReplyDeleteI don't get what makes a city, my town is relatively large and does have a cathedral, but yet it is still a town, he hasn't even considered being changed into a city i do not think. Yet there are other 'cities' that are smaller and may or may not have a cathedral, yet still they manage to be called a city, i would love to know how they make up their minds about these things.
